You've always known he didn't like the house, and his most recent letter suggests he's gone a bit strange in his isolation, and seeing unexplainable things:
"The neighbours saw they saw and heard nothing that night. In the cold light of day, I fear that they might be right, that I am losing my mind. Could you come out for a weekend, maybe? Like old times. I will put you up and give you a good meal, you and anyone else you care to bring. Make a holiday out of it!"
