Seventy years ago, Markus Victoria created the Steam Engine and the Guild of Engineers, earning the ire of the Guild of Magicians; 20 years later his daughter Adria unveiled the first Thinking Engine. Now her granddaughter Cere is favorite to take the office of Grand Mayor, until the ghastly murder of the family's eldest retainer casts a dread pall over their name. Demagogues spread stories of infernal pacts and sacrifices, and the Guild of Magicians is ever ready to fan the flames. Amid name-calling from all sides and allegations of corruption, a group of citizens from all sides is deputized to observe the investigation as it unfolds, ignorant of the danger they will find!
