Space Combat in Movies, Books and Games: Getting It Not Wrong
Summary:
Movies usually get things wrong when depicting space combat. Realistic ship movement, zero-G hand-to-hand combat, & unique aspects of space warfare for writers & game devs. Izaac Falken, NSDM staff.
Description:
Movies and novels often get things wrong when depicting combat in space. Zero-G & vacuum conditions produce effects that run contrary to human instincts & experiences, including those of the potential audience. This seminar examines how to write & simulate realistic space combat for storywriters & game developers. Well discuss the complexities of vessel movement in zero-gravity environments, where traditional concepts of speed & maneuverability are fundamentally different. Hand-to-hand combat in low-G & vacuum conditions will also be explored, highlighting unique challenges & outcomes. The session will cover both the benefits & pitfalls of incorporating these realistic elements into narratives, helping to create more immersive & believable space warfare scenarios. Presented by Izaac Falken, on the National Security Decision Making Game staff.
Elizabeth Hargrave, David Gordon, & Michael O'Connell discuss how they expanded the Wingspan universe to dragons & fish. What makes these games feel like they are in a shared family, yet different?

Starting Your Own Board Game Company, Legally Speaking
Summary:
Seminar on legal issues key to small biz owners: avoiding accidental IP infringement, reporting under the CTA, partnership agreements issues, and navigating securities and consumer protection laws.
Description:
As an eight year Texas attorney, I can attest that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. What may cost only a few thousand dollars (to pay an attorney to guide you beforehand) can instead cost tens of thousands of dollars to have an attorney defend you in litigation. This seminar is planned as a survey of key legal areas for future small business owners by discussing: how to avoid accidently infringing on another's copyright and trademarks; the status of and registering under the Federal Corporate Transparency Act, which is currently (January 2025) under a federal injunction; issues to be aware of when having or not having a partnership agreement or a company agreement; and how to avoid accidently violating both securities laws (raising funds) and consumer protection laws (deceptive advertising) when getting your business started and taking your products to market.
